<Discover the Joys of Writing: My First Steps into Online Expression>
Written on
Isn't it time to stop delaying and just share your story? That’s the mantra I keep reminding myself. But there’s always that nagging fear: what if no one reads it? Or worse, what if they do read it and don't enjoy it? Well, you know what? Too bad. It’s time to hit publish and let the chips fall where they may. So, here I go…
What’s all the buzz about _“online writing”_ anyway? I’m not entirely sure, but I’m ready to dive in, so stick with me on this intriguing adventure!
At this point in my life, I’m exploring alternative income sources, with one essential factor: freedom. The freedom to work from anywhere I choose, and at any time I prefer. That’s what draws me to _online writing._ Although I’m not exactly sure how to begin, my research suggests that Medium could be a fantastic starting point.
I’m also keen on absorbing insights from successful individuals like Nicolas Cole, Dickie Bush, and Ali Abdaal, who have dedicated themselves to achieving financial and time freedom and generously share their wisdom with anyone eager to learn.
However, I recognize there’s no _“get rich quick”_ method that will magically fulfill all my aspirations overnight with minimal effort — it’s clear that this path requires hard work, dedication, and determination to navigate the highs and lows of _online writing._
So, which topics am I truly passionate and knowledgeable enough about that would entice others to read my content? That’s a pivotal question I need to answer.
Much of what I’ve encountered emphasizes the importance of _“finding your niche”_, but how does one even go about that? I’m uncertain, but as a starting point, here’s a list of subjects I’m passionate about or at least enthusiastic enough to write on:
1. Martial Arts
Over the years, I’ve explored various Martial Arts, although I admit I haven’t committed long enough to earn that coveted Black Belt status for several reasons.
Yet, my fascination with martial arts remains strong, particularly their connection to health, well-being, mindfulness, spirituality, and the fundamental skills for self-defense.
I’ve dabbled in Aikido, a more passive style, as well as Budo-Jitsu, Tae-Kwon-Do, and Military Unarmed Combat. My interest particularly lies in Japanese Martial Arts, drawn by their rich culture and the profound respect they embody for themselves, one another, and their environment, alongside the honor associated with being a warrior.
I’m also intrigued by reality-based styles like Krav Maga (Israeli) and Tony Blauer’s SPEAR system. From what I understand, SPEAR is a leading scientific approach that teaches individuals to leverage inherent human defense mechanisms to enhance survival chances — pretty fascinating, right?
There’s so much more to explore on this topic, but I’ll pause for now.
2. Music
I’ve been playing the drums (albeit poorly) for many years. My journey began in high school during a music lesson where we attempted to tap a simple beat. I couldn’t manage it and felt utterly uncoordinated.
Frustrated, I practiced at home until I could finally keep the beat, progressing to playing along with songs on the radio (back when Spotify and Apple Music were non-existent) and figuring out which hand hit which drum.
During my second year in the Army, I purchased my first drum kit from a fellow apprentice — a modest one, but it was mine. I set it up in our accommodation and spent weekends jamming to my favorite tracks.
Over the years, I sold that kit and acquired a few others, but when I moved to an apartment in 2016, I had to let them go to avoid disturbing the neighbors.
A few years later, I bought an electronic drum kit, which I adore! I can practice any time without bothering anyone, although I don’t think I’ve significantly improved.
I mostly play along with songs and haven’t taken formal lessons or learned music theory, but it’s something I enjoy and serves as excellent exercise, especially when rocking out to Silverchair or Green Day!
I’ve also dabbled in guitar over the years. After leaving the Army, I treated myself to an acoustic and an electric guitar (both budget models). Back then, the internet wasn’t as expansive, and there weren’t countless YouTube tutorials, so I tried to teach myself. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t progress much, and it faded from my focus for a long time.
However, this year I signed up for guitar lessons, which rekindled my passion for music. I even splurged on a stunning Fender Telecaster in Torino Red, which made playing so much more enjoyable. I also began experimenting with effects pedals.
My skills have improved, and I can now play along with several songs. I’ve developed an interest in guitar music theory (did you know there are multiple ways to play the same chord?).
I’ve also become enamored with effects pedals. I started with a Distortion pedal (the trusty Boss DS-1W) and now have six, with a growing wishlist for more. Santa, if you’re listening, may I have an Electro Harmonix Pitch Fork this Christmas?
My ultimate aspiration is to perform an entire song solo, playing all the instruments (drums, guitar, bass, and keyboard when I finally get around to learning). I’ve seen multi-instrumentalists do this online, and it’s incredibly cool! I’ve been experimenting with a looper, but it’s still early days.
I’d also love to learn to sing, although I’m quite terrible at it and too embarrassed to try in front of others. I do sing along in the car when I’m alone, but I often comment on how awful I sound. Perhaps one day I’ll find a teacher to help me conquer my vocal challenges.
Thank goodness you only have to read my words and not endure my dreadful singing!
3. Technology
I’ll admit it — I can be a bit of a tech enthusiast… at times. It really depends; some tech fascinates me, while other aspects just drive me nuts!
For instance, when we moved into our current home, I became obsessed with transforming it into a smart home. I spent countless hours researching the best smart home gadgets, dreaming of a future where I could control everything with my smartphone. Anyone who’s attempted this knows it can be a frustrating journey.
As an Apple devotee, I based my smart home on Apple products, using an Apple HomePod and Apple TV as the central hubs, along with other Apple HomeKit compatible devices. This means Siri is our household smart assistant… when she works.
I have a few smart bulbs programmed to turn on at sunset and off at a designated time, which generally functions well. However, the main issue lies with Siri. Oddly enough, she seems to understand me most of the time but often fails to respond to my wife’s commands.
It’s gotten to the point where my wife suspects that Siri has a soft spot for me and intentionally ignores her. Anyone else experience this?
I have plenty more to discuss regarding technology.
It appears I’ve written more than I initially anticipated, which I suppose is a good sign. I had intended to cover additional passions, but in the interest of keeping my very first article concise and hopefully leaving readers wanting more, I’ll wrap it up here. As for my other interests, they include:
- Gym Workouts
- Cars & 4WDs
- Travel Hacks & Gadgets
- Fashion? I’m no fashion expert, but I’ve certainly gone through phases of obsession over various clothing, footwear, sunglasses, and accessories.
Do any of these topics resonate with you, dear reader? I don’t know, but every journey has to start somewhere, right?
If you’ve made it this far, you’re my new hero! Please let me know your thoughts. Also, feel free to comment on any of the subjects that intrigue you or if there’s anything specific you’d like to hear more about. Thank you!
Dan
P.S. How great is Reacher? Not the Tom Cruise movie adaptation (which were okay), but the Alan Ritchson series on Amazon Prime. Season 1 was phenomenal and packed with action, and Season 2 is due out mid-December — can’t wait! Sorry for this random tangent, but that’s just how I roll. Peace.
