Being alone and feeling bored can often be a challenging mix for many single women. You might find yourself constantly checking your phone, hoping for a call, or going on countless dates that lead to nothing. Thoughts of whether you’re the only one without a partner can creep in, leading to worries about future loneliness. It’s hard to admit, but being single can be tough.
It’s common to feel a pang of guilt when you see couples, wishing for the companionship they have, feeling as though you shouldn’t voice your loneliness. You might think that expressing your desire for a relationship makes you seem weak or needy.
Even as an independent woman who doesn’t rely on a man for happiness, it’s normal to desire closeness. There are moments when holding hands, sharing a bed, or dreaming of marriage feels comforting.
Boredom can become your constant companion; you may find yourself eating, binge-watching shows, scrolling through social media, and then repeating this cycle. Some mornings, you may wake up feeling an emptiness that’s hard to shake off. It’s perfectly fine to acknowledge your feelings. Wanting a relationship doesn’t mean you should ignore your emotions or feel guilty about them.
Being a strong woman doesn’t equate to being devoid of feelings. It doesn’t mean you have to reject the idea of love or companionship. You don’t need to pretend that being single is always enjoyable when you would rather be in a meaningful relationship. Acknowledging your desires doesn’t diminish your strength; it shows your authenticity.
Throughout the years, I’ve developed several methods to alleviate stress and anxiety, which also serve as great distractions from boredom. Here are some strategies that may help you, too.
#1. Refresh with a walk or drive. Staying indoors day after day can lead to feelings of sadness. Whenever I’m feeling restless or bored, I try to step outside for a walk or engage in outdoor activities.
While it might not always be appealing to leave your home, stepping outside can be beneficial. Challenge yourself to leave your phone behind and immerse yourself in nature. Enjoy the sunshine and observe the world around you. If you’re up for it, taking a drive can also uplift your mood and enhance your well-being.
#2. Prioritize self-care. This past year has been transformative for me, as I’ve focused on my mental and physical well-being. Stress and boredom can take a toll, and self-care is a vital antidote.
Creating a spa-like atmosphere at home with soothing music can significantly reduce stress. One of my cherished self-care rituals is indulging in a long, bubble-filled bath. With some reading material and candles nearby, I often lose track of time, emerging revitalized and ready for new adventures.
#3. Join a yoga class. Yoga might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but its benefits are undeniable. It promotes relaxation and boosts self-esteem. Consider starting with a 30-day online yoga challenge. A few deep breaths and sun salutations can shift your focus from boredom.

#4. Explore meditation. Taking just five minutes each day to meditate has had a profound impact on my mental health this past year. #5. Start a garden. Gardening can be a delightful way to socialize and take charge of your health and environment. The physical activity involved enhances strength and well-being. I’ve seen friends turn a single plant into a flourishing garden, and nurturing plants can bring joy into your home. If caring for a plant feels daunting, consider starting small with a cactus.
#6. Cultivate a reading habit. If you have time to spare, reading can be a great way to engage your mind. Join online book clubs or start one with friends. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or haven’t picked up a book in years, there are countless titles to spark your interest.
#7. Experiment with baking. Baking can be a wonderful distraction when you’re feeling down. It allows for creativity and can soothe your mind with comforting aromas. If you’re not ready for complex recipes, begin with simple ones and have fun experimenting.
#8. Consider getting a pet. Pets can provide valuable companionship and enrich your life. They’re attuned to our emotions and can help ease loneliness. Whether it’s a dog, cat, or even watching fish, caring for an animal brings joy and fulfillment.
#9. Learn a new language through games. Boredom can drive us to accomplish tasks we might otherwise avoid. Learning a language can enhance cognitive abilities and is an entertaining way to keep engaged. Many apps and games are designed to make language learning enjoyable.
#10. Try playing a musical instrument. I found solace in learning the piano during a difficult period in my life. After a confrontation with a neighbor, I stumbled upon a guitarist playing peacefully, which led me to enroll in piano lessons. Music became my escape and a source of joy.
#11. Establish a fitness routine. While it may seem less exciting, a consistent fitness regimen can yield significant benefits. Start with short workouts and gradually increase intensity. Pair your workouts with healthy cooking or intermittent fasting to find what works best for you.
#12. Enjoy listening to podcasts. Podcasts offer a break from screens and an opportunity to explore diverse topics. They provide both entertainment and education, making them a great addition to your daily routine.
