Fred Ogden: A Journey from Oldham to Almost Fame
Written on
Hello, I’m Fred, and here is my story:
Brian Cox is among my favorite scientists, known for his contributions to astrophysics. As for me? I’m merely almost famous!
About Me: Just a Lad from Oldham
I was born in a modest terraced house in Oldham, a town once infamous for its cotton mills and pollution, located in the North West of England, near Manchester. Oldham has been home to notable figures, such as Louise Brown, the world’s first test-tube baby.
Brian Cox is another notable individual from Oldham. In 2010, he received The Kelvin Medal from the Institute of Physics for his efforts in making science accessible to the public.
Oldham's history includes famous personalities like Winston Churchill, who began his political career as the MP for Oldham in 1900.
Common Threads with Brian Cox
- We share similar accents.
- Both pursued scientific careers—Brian as a physicist, and I as a biologist.
- We both earned BSc (Hons) degrees from Manchester University.
- Both of us are skilled in science communication.
- We received Gold Medals for our contributions to communicating science—my award was in 1992, and Brian's in 2010.
We were raised in the same town, sharing that unique Oldham accent. Additionally, we are both supporters of Oldham Athletic, a football team humorously dubbed "almost famous" in its own right.
One notable difference: I became a Licensed Real Estate Agent, while Brian continues to explore the cosmos.
The Spirit of Oldham
There's a saying: “You can take the lad out of Oldham, but you can’t take Oldham out of the lad!” I often sing a song when introducing myself to new audiences:
I Went Up to Heaven
I went up to heaven one morning in May. The angels said: “Where d’ya come from, and where do ya stay?” When I told them “from Oldham,” they all did stare! They said: “Come in lad, you’re welcome. You’re the first one from there!”
My Interests and Influences
Aside from my scientific career, I have a keen interest in theology. Growing up in a Christian home led me to follow Jesus and later serve as a preacher in both the Methodist Church in England and the Uniting Church of Australia.
I admire figures like Mahatma Gandhi, who profoundly explored religious themes and emphasized the value of truth. Here are two quotes that resonate with me:
- “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians: Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
- “There is no religion higher than Truth & Righteousness.”
Karen Armstrong, a leading commentator on comparative religion, also inspires me. Her insights encourage open-mindedness in our search for spiritual truths.
My Professional Journey
I have had a diverse career spanning education and science, including positions in England, Lesotho, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. My roles have ranged from teacher to senior lecturer, and I’ve even ventured into real estate.
Now, I’m retired but remain active as a writer, thinker, and speaker. My journey into writing began late, but I have since published many short stories and articles.
Looking Ahead
As of 2023, I have penned approximately 200 pieces online. Despite my contributions, I still consider myself "Almost Famous," a title I embrace with humor.
Closing Thoughts
In the words of William Sparrow, “Seek the truth, come whence it may, cost what it will.”
This is the essence of my journey—an ongoing search for truth and understanding.
