Why do you write on Medium?
Medium is a remarkable platform for both emerging and seasoned writers. Its welcoming nature encourages new voices to blend with established professionals, allowing beginners to learn and hone their skills in a supportive and vibrant environment.
I appreciate the platform's emphasis on inclusivity and diversity, which creates a rich global interaction.
What are your values as a writer?
My writing values are quite straightforward. I aim to make higher forms of art, life, and literature more accessible. I strongly oppose the notion that intellectual pursuits are elitist; my own background as a working-class individual with a classical education drives this belief.
I want underprivileged kids to discover Shakespeare and similar works, aligning my mission with the ethos of ILLUMINATION that champions inclusivity and diversity.
Truth, honesty, and authenticity are crucial to me. Without these qualities, a writer's credibility is compromised. Trust is built on these foundational principles, alongside a shared understanding of decency and ethics.
I firmly reject racism, sexism, and homophobia, with a strong commitment to feminist equality.
What are the top three books that influenced your life?
The first book that profoundly affected me is Ted Hughes' Selected Poems 1957–1967. This collection opened my eyes to the power of poetic expression and deepened my appreciation for both poetry and nature.
Next, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell sparked my understanding of societal systems and their workings.
Lastly, Shakespeare's King Lear offers a brilliant exploration of familial dysfunction and human fragility, teaching us valuable lessons.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy reading, writing, walking, and pursuing personal growth. Other hobbies include mountain climbing, cycling, making music, sailing, and surfing.
Unfortunately, the pandemic has limited my outdoor activities, so I’ve focused on writing, walking, and learning Japanese.
How do you connect with your readers?
I connect with my readers through my choice of topics and by expressing my core values. I strive for a sense of shared understanding regarding ethics, education, and personal growth, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility for one's circumstances.
A sense of humor is also essential. I believe in the concept of one world; we all inhabit the same planet, and it's vital to support one another for our collective benefit.
Why did you join Illumination?
I discovered Illumination through the Medium platform and was immediately drawn to its values of serendipity, diversity, and collaboration. The potential for synergy among writers and readers intrigued me.
How has your experience been so far?
Illumination has far surpassed my expectations as a quality publication and platform. Its user-friendly design is accessible for both readers and writers, making it an excellent environment for creativity.
In terms of fulfilling its promises, Illumination has undoubtedly delivered.
Who are your top ten writers?
My top ten writers include Dr. John Rose, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, Terry Mansfield, Tony Young Jr., Henery X, Geetika Sethi, Adiba Abid, Rebecca Stevens, Danny Oak, and Tree Langdon. If I could expand this list, I'd also include Britni Pepper and other talented editors.
What are the success factors for you as a writer on Medium?
Success on Medium hinges on a commitment to learning, perseverance, and a willingness to help others succeed. An eclectic approach in both writing and reading is also crucial.
What do you recommend to new writers on Illumination?
I advise new writers to familiarize themselves with the editing aspects of the platform and to read widely from their peers' works.
What are your future plans as a writer?
I plan to continue my journey of exploration and improvement in writing. I have a couple of books in the pipeline: one will compile my poems and short stories, while another will be a semi-biographical novel inspired by Dickens. Additionally, I’m working on new music for an upcoming album and am excited about possibly collaborating on a modern adaptation of King Lear with Akos Peterbencze.
